UNICEF: All stakeholders must get involved in protecting children's rights

FENA

MOSTAR, September 17 (FENA) - A consultative meeting between representatives of media outlets and UNICEF was held in Mostar on Tuesday, with the aim of involving all stakeholders in meeting the children's rights in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“The UNICEF in BiH wants to involve all stakeholders, with a particular focus on the media and creators of public change, pointing out the need to ensure all rights for every child in Bosnia and Herzegovina and not to exclude any child,” stated after the meeting UNICEF BiH Communications Manager Nela Kačmarčik.

She recalled that 30 years ago, world leaders signed a historic commitment to the world's children by adopting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

“We need all the media space we can get to talk about the Convention on the Rights of the Child, about progress in the field of children's rights, and we need to talk about the problems that children, parents and all those who care for them face, in order to find possible solutions to these problems,” Kačmarčik said.

She warned that the rights of the child are not only declarative and that every child should be able to exercise his or her rights in every respect.

When it comes to child protection in BiH, Kačmarčik said that there are still "a lot of shortcomings in the state system that are affecting children to great extent".

“BiH has committed itself to fulfill all rights for every child, including the right to survival, education and the right to development to its full potential, and in a country such as BiH, special attention should be paid to children who are marginalized in order to make any progress, and not only for children but for the whole society,” said Kačmarčik.

She added that UNICEF, as a UN agency, is part of a system that cooperates with authorities in BiH and provides support to official authorities and negotiates with them what are the priorities for children. According to her, UNICEF also listens to children, parents, experts and the media, all in order to help BiH fulfill its obligations when it comes to the rights of the child.
