European Mobility Week 2019 taking place under the motto 'Move with us!'

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, September 16 (FENA) - The European Mobility Week is marked from September 16 to 22, under the slogan "Move with us!", and focuses on safe walking and cycling.

This European initiative is marked in over 2,500 cities and over 50 countries.

The ‘European Mobility Week 2019’ encourages cities to introduce and promote sustainable means of transport and connecting citizens enabling them to use alternative means of transport.

“Let us use the European Mobility Week to raise citizens' awareness and to cycle, hike or use public transport. We do this for us, for our children and for the future. If this becomes our habit, our cities would certainly be cleaner, healthier and more dynamic. Walking and cycling are active modes of movement and are key to the future of European cities. Urban mobility initiatives promoting smart and sustainable urban transport are desirable in any urban environment,” said Gianluca Vannini, Head of Operations Section for Social Development, Civil Society and Cross-Border Cooperation of the Delegation of the European Union to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The motto of this year's European Mobility Week is "Move with us!", and focuses on safe walking and cycling and emphasizes the often undervalued mode of movement - walking.

“The European Mobility Week is a great opportunity to present sustainable modes of transport and influence citizens' opinions to encourage them to use environmentally friendly modes of transport. Sarajevo has good conditions for most citizens who do not want private cars to go to work. For starters, it might be a good idea to make them aware of the benefits of walking, biking, or electric scooters. Over time, the number of people would increase, life would be more comfortable and pollution would decrease,” said Asmir Hakanović from the Institute of Traffic Engineering and Business Consulting.

By promoting sustainable modes of movement, the European Union shares a common goal and a shared identity with all cities and countries around the world and Europe participating in the celebration of the European Mobility Week and the "World Car Fee Day".

The importance of this topic was also pointed out by the President of "Giro di Sarajevo" association Nihad Selimović, emphasizing the advantages of using a bicycle as a means of transport.

“We are organizing the Giro di Sarajevo at the end of the European Mobility Week, which will be an added value for the gathering of Sarajevo cyclists and another indicator that we are a positive example that this city should and must count on if it wants change. We have been trying to spread awareness for the whole decade about the benefits of using bicycles as means of transport in Sarajevo,” said Selimović.

In 2002, the Directorate-General for the Environment of the European Commission launched the European Mobility Week campaign, which is organized every year, with activities ending on September 22 to mark World Car Free Day.

To mark the European Mobility Week in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the European Union Info Center in BiH, in cooperation with partners and schools across BiH, is participating in a number of activities aimed at promoting sustainable urban mobility.

The "Walk with us!" event is scheduled for September 17, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Wilson’s Promenade in Sarajevo.

The “Giro di Sarajevo” event will be held on September 22, from 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm and starts in front of the Elementary School "Skender Kulenović", in Dobrinja, Sarajevo and ends in the Wilson’s Promenade.

On the same day, September 22, a bicycle race "Two wheels are enough!", will be organized from 11:00 am to 14:00 pm, in the streets of Banja Luka, announced the EU Info Center in BiH.
