SARAJEVO, September 9 (FENA) - The 17th Session of the Strategic Committee on Weapons, Ammunition and Mine Explosives (NMiMES Strategic Committee) was held today in Sarajevo, discussing current projects and activities that focus on enhancing security and proper disposal of surplus weapons.

BiH Minister of Defense Marina Pendeš emphasized that the session was an opportunity for a comprehensive review of current measures and activities to address surplus weapons, including unstable ammunition and mine-explosives, and setting further priorities in that regard.

She estimated that the process was implemented in a quality manner, stating that over 7.000 tons out of 24.000 are left of the aforementioned weapons, ammunition and mine explosives, including a certain amount of perspective ammunition.

“Great progress has been made in securing and protecting our perspective ammunition and weapons storage sites, as well as military equipment,” said the BiH Minister of Defense, stating that educative activities were carried out, and that a laboratory was established in Doboj where the 'life cycle' of ammunition is tested in order to determine the quantities of unstable ammunition and the need for its destruction.

Deputy Head of the OSCE Mission to BiH, Alexander Chuplygin emphasized the importance of the process of resolving surplus weapons and strengthening the state's capacity in the field of arms control in accordance with international standards.

He underlined the support of the OSCE Mission for the improvement of security infrastructure at locations of ammunition and weapons storage sites, thereby improving the security of military personnel at those sites, as well as the security of civilians stationed in close proximity.

“Our mission, together with international and domestic partners, is implementing the SAFE-UP project, thanks to which concrete improvements have been made to the mentioned infrastructure,” said Chuplygin, emphasizing the OSCE's readiness to continue supporting the MoD and AFBiH in the area of strengthening security infrastructure and prevention security risks.

Pendeš said that the ANP was not a document imposed on Bosnia and Herzegovina by NATO, but that it was related to the approved Membership Action Plan (MAP) for BiH, i.e. five chapters regarding which state institutions should refer to.

In this context, Pendeš believes that the ANP should be included in the agenda as soon as possible, at the next session of the BiH Council of Ministers, reminding that the year (2019), in which the first ANP was to be adopted, is almost over.

The meeting of the Strategic Committee on Weapons, Ammunition and Mine Explosives was chaired by the Minister of Defense of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Marina Pendeš, and hosted by the OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina this year.

The meeting was also attended by representatives of embassies - the United States of America, the Swiss Confederation, the Federal Republic of Germany, the United Kingdom, the Republic of Austria and the Kingdom of Sweden.
