Anniversary of the death of four Italian aviation officers marked near Fojnica

SARAJEVO, September 3 (FENA) - The anniversary of the death of four Italian aviation officers whose plane was shot down on September 3, 1992, during the transport of humanitarian aid to civilians in the besieged Sarajevo, was marked on the slopes of the Zec Hill near Fojnica.

Four crew members, who were awarded military gold medals of honor, Marco Betti, Marco Rigliaco, Giuseppe Buttaglieri, and Giuliano Velardi, lost their lives in this tragic event.

At the monument erected near the crash site, Carlo Marcotulli, Chargé d'Affaires of the Embassy of Italy in Sarajevo, reminded of the sacrifice of four aviation men testifying to the commitment of Italian military forces and the cooperation with the authorities on peacebuilding in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The commemoration was attended by a delegation of the BiH Ministry of Defense, Italian military personnel serving with the EUFOR Mission and NATO HQ in Sarajevo, along with representatives of the two commands, Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Luigi Pezzuto, representatives of the Fojnica municipality and numerous military attachés.
