SARAJEVO, August 28 (FENA) - The 24th anniversary of the massacre at Markale City Market was marked today. On 28 August 1995, at 11 a.m., a mortar shell fired from the aggressor positions killed 43 civilians, lightly and severely wounded 84.

People who survived this massacre together with their neighbors, friends, citizens of Sarajevo and representatives of authorities paid tribute to the victims by laying flowers, holding a minute’s silence and saying prayers.

Minister of Veterans’ Issues of Sarajevo Canton Ismir Jusko said that marking the anniversary of massacre on Markale City Market has two symbolisms, one because it is the last major massacre that took place in besieged Sarajevo, and the other because the massacre was the reason for launching NATO air strikes, after which the Dayton Peace Agreement was signed.

“There is no way to bring back those who were killed to their loved ones and there is no justice for a mother who lost her child,” said Jusko.

Mortar shell of 120 mm caliber, fired from the enemy’s positions from the direction of Mt Trebević, exploded at the northern entrance to the City Market, and this is considered to be one of the most terrible crimes committed by the Serb military, police and paramilitary formations in the besieged Sarajevo.

During the war of aggression on Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1992 to 1995, more than 11.500 people were killed during the siege of Sarajevo, of whom more than 1.600 children.
