Jerlagić: As city archive, we do not have enough space for archival material

SARAJEVO, August 26 (FENA) – Acting Director of the Sarajevo Historical Archives (JU HAS) Velid Jerlagić points out that the institution faces a lack of storage space for archival material, and the ideal solution to this problem would be a storage building that would meet the conditions necessary for proper storage of such material.

“As a city archive, we do not have the storage space for archival material. Our biggest problem is space. It will be difficult for us to receive new material, which we are obliged to do by law,” Jerlagić told Fena.

He stresses that at the same time he will make efforts to continue the digitization of certain archival material and start digitizing some new funds. He thinks it would be significant to the functioning of the Archive.

“This is all with the aim of protecting the archival material, the oldest archival material, namely the Oriental Collection, the Cartographic Collection, the Collection of pictures, photographs, postcards,” he said.

He explains that the Sarajevo Historical Archive has two storage places, in Čadordžina Street (former Vakuf Orphanage building) and Ferhadija Street (an atomic shelter adapted to the conditions of archival material). Some archival material is also stored in the Archive Administration Building in Alipašina Street, where rarities, library material and personal funds are kept.

Jerlagić recalls that there have been numerous attempts so far to find solutions to the issue of disposing archival material, which the Archive is taking for permanent storage, but also emphasizes that a short-term investment, which would ensure the placement of the material in the next 10 or 20 years, is not a profitable investment. He says that it is necessary to solve this problem systematically and completely.

“We tried to solve this problem in different ways. However, it is all a costly and unprofitable investment because it is short-term solution. For a city archive, such as the Sarajevo Historical Archive, the ideal solution would be to get a storage building that would meet all the conditions necessary for the proper preservation of the archival material (temperature, humidity, distance from the city center and certain institutions…),” he emphasized. He adds that these are always the most important documents.
