Iraqi and Turkey citizens indicted of smuggling migrants

SARAJEVO, August 16 (FENA) - The Prosecutor's Office of the Special Section for Organized Crime, Economic Crime and Corruption of the Prosecutor's Office of BiH has filed an indictment against Murat Erbil, born March 20, 1968 in Erbil, Iraq, a Turkish and Iraqi citizen in custody; and Sahin Sef, born on August 9, 1993 in Samsun, Turkey, a Turkish national.

The accused are charged with smuggling illegal migrants, mostly Iraqi citizens, who illegally entered Bosnia and Herzegovina during 2019, acting in mutual agreement and coordination, and did not have valid residence documents in BiH.

The indictment alleges that the defendants acted against the Protocol on the Smuggling of Migrants by Land, Sea and Air by supplementing the UN Convention against Transnational and Organized Crime in order to obtain illicit material gain.

The defendants are charged with smuggling at least 15 illegal migrants on three occasions, transported for monetary amounts of up to 4,000 euros across the territory of BiH along the border with Croatia, and they were detected and prevented by officials of the State Investigation and Protection Agency - SIPA.

The Accused are charged with the criminal offense of Smuggling of Persons from the Criminal Code of BiH.

The indictment was forwarded for confirmation to the Court of BiH, the Prosecutor's Office of BiH said.
