ŠIROKI BRIJEG, August 5 (FENA) - Over the past weekend, the Police of the West Herzegovina Canton (WHC) located 58 migrants in the area of the canton, which is a significant increase compared to the previous period.
The cantonal Interior Minister Zdravko Boras says that the increase in the number of migrants requires certain steps, such as stricter controls on entry into the canton.
According to him, the increased number of migrants is caused by a greater concentration of migrants in the area of Una-Sana Canton and the shift towards the so-called southern route in the Neretva valley.
“The number of migrants in the WHC has increased significantly compared to the previous period, especially since crossing the border into Croatia has been blocked in the Bihać area and because of this some of them chose to try to cross the border somewhere else, thus we now have the southern route in the Neretva valley. I warned about this a half a year ago,” Boras told FENA, recalling a decision by the Sarajevo Canton MoI that prohibits migrants from gathering at public places in the area of the canton.
He also added that WHC would take certain steps when it comes to protecting the security situation in the canton.
“We had a meeting today at the Police Directorate on this topic and we are ready to take steps regarding the security in this canton,” said Boras, adding that the police will increase security checks because, as he says, it is unacceptable for this canton to find itself in the same situation as the Bihać area or the area of the Canton 10 when it comes to influx of migrants.
“We must protect our canton, and one of these steps will be stricter control. I must emphasize that the largest number of migrants was noticed in the Ljubuški area and in the coming period we will focus our attention on this area,” said Boras.
In an operation conducted by the police in the WHC, on Friday, 2 August, they located 21 foreign nationals - migrants, twelve from Iraq, four from Syria, two from Algeria and Palestine each and one from Libya.
On Saturday, August 3, the police located 33 foreign nationals. It was a larger group of Iraqis. On Sunday, August 4, the police officers spotted four more foreign nationals, two Algerians and two Palestinians.
