SARAJEVO, August 2 (FENA) – Bihać Mayor Šuhret Fazlić met today in Bihać with an MP in the European Parliament on behalf of the Greens/European Free Alliance, Eric Marquardt.
Marquardt also came to Bihać as deputy chairman of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs and several other committees related to the Mediterranean countries, together with German journalists, to discuss the situation regarding the migrant crisis in Bihać, and in particular the actions of the Croatian police, who return illegal migrants caught in Croatia to Bihać past official border crossings and international regulations, the Mayor of Bihać said.
In a statement, MEP Marquardt, along with Mayor Fazlić, became convinced at the Lohova locality of the route through which migrants return to our country, and Mayor Fazlić spoke about his personal experiences and meetings with Croatian police officers who were with migrants in BiH many times before.
After a joint visit and a visit to Vučjak, Marquardt said that “as a European, he is ashamed when the European Border Police act as a criminal gang that robs and beats people and illegally returns them to BiH from Croatia,” the statement said.
“When EU member states are acting unlawfully, then the President of the European Commission must criticize it and not hide it,” says Marquardt.
He points out that every person on EU territory has the right to apply for asylum and has the right to a constitutional procedure. It is impermissible to violate their basic human rights at the EU border, he adds.
“The EU and Bosnia and Herzegovina must work together and create more humane accommodation immediately. The camps in BiH are overcrowded, so one should not be surprised when people continue to flee to Europe. It is not fair to leave the two Bosnian cities of Bihać and Velika Kladuša alone with this challenge,” Marquardt concluded, the Mayor of Bihać said.
