SARAJEVO, August 1 (FENA) - The International Holocaust Remembrance Day in World War II is commemorated on August 2, in memory of the date back in 1944, when 2,897 Roma were killed in Auschwitz concentration camp in just one night.
The commemoration date, established by the Council of Europe at the initiative of numerous Roma associations, is an occasion to remember, pay respect and honor all the 500,000 Roma brutally killed in concentration camps and in other way during World War II, as well as all other victims of the Holocaust during the darkest period of human history, stated the Council of National Minorities of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Council of National Minorities of BiH calls on all the citizens to join representatives of Roma associations in Bosnia and Herzegovina on this International Day of Remembrance of Roma victims of the Holocaust, who will visit Donja Gradina Memorial on August 2, and pay tribute to the tens of thousands of Roma killed in the system of the Jasenovac concentration camp.
Fostering a culture of remembrance and honoring the Roma victims of the Holocaust is our duty and obligation to ensure that such evil and such crimes never happen to anyone again, it is said in the statement.
The Council of National Minorities of BiH, together with all other competent authorities at all levels, as well as with international organizations, is intensively engaged and will continue to work to protect the rights, prevent any form of discrimination and improve the living conditions of Roma and all other national minorities in BiH, stated the Council of National Minorities of BiH.
