SARAJEVO, July 29 (FENA) - A protest against the potential radioactive waste disposal site in Trgovska gora in Croatia, right on the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina, took place today outside the Embassy of the Republic of Croatia in Sarajevo.
According to the representative of the organization "Climate Save Bosnia" Maida Šabeta, the decision on the construction of the disposal site will be made in September, and Trgovska gora at the border of Croatia with BiH, as she said, is still the only location under consideration by the Croatian side.
2The construction of the landfill directly threatens the lives of 300,000 citizens of BiH, mostly from the municipalities of Novi Grad and the Una-Sana Canton, it threatens the Una River as well,” warned Šabeta.
She emphasizes that the nuclear waste disposal site would endanger a number of economy branches, including tourism, agriculture and would contaminate the entire geographical area, thus most of the population would have to relocate.
“We also have to remember that this area is very susceptible to earthquakes, and we must also note that the study of the environmental impact assessment in Croatia has not been done properly, as confirmed by experts from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. Trgovska gora’s geographical position is such that the biggest negative impact will be felt in BiH,” she explained.
She added that the organizations that participate in the protests would not give up on stopping this project and that letters have been sent to the institutions of BiH and Croatia requesting an adequate response, and if that does not happen, legal action will be taken.
