Emrić: We do not want a nuclear waste dump close to our border

SARAJEVO, July 22 (FENA) - A member of the House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH and a member of the “Green Club” Jasmin Emrić warned today that by adopting the National Program for the Implementation of the Radioactive and Nuclear Waste Management Strategy, the Government of the Republic of Croatia reiterated its view that they want to build a radioactive and nuclear waste dump at the Trgovska Gora location, near the border with BiH, and that all subsequent activities of that country are not surprising.

In an interview for FENA, Emrić also reminds that the Republic of Slovenia still offers Croatia to build a joint landfill at Vrbina.

In his words, the competent BiH institutions need their activities to focus more strongly on the European Union so Bosnia and Herzegovina can even more strongly express its objection against establishing the radioactive and nuclear waste disposal site at that location.

He also adds that BiH diplomacy should do the utmost to make this issue of the highest priority for talks between BiH and Croatia.

He notes that it is obvious that Croatia does not want to hear “voice and opposition from BiH” and considers that the ultimate measure will be the initiation of disputes and arbitration in front of international competent institutions.

Croatia and Slovenia co-own the nuclear power plant, each with a share of 50 percent, and its closure is planned until 2043.

He also believes that it is now very important for BiH institutions to establish official communication with the Government of the Republic of Slovenia, to get acquainted with the opposition and the official position of BiH and to present how negative and harmful it is to BiH, stressing that BiH will do everything to prevent the construction of landfills at Čerkezovac.

“If Croatia wants to resolve the issue of radioactive and nuclear waste disposal from the Krško nuclear power plant within 2023, it has to seek a solution that will not cause the dispute. If Croatia continues with this intent, it must count on a long-standing dispute with BiH.

All relevant institutions - the BiH Presidency, the Council of Ministers, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of BiH and others now have to make the maximum to be in the focus, present in the public so Slovenia and Croatia can realize how important this issue is for BiH,” said Emrić.
