Fikret Mrkonjić from Banovići sentenced to six years in prison for war crimes

TUZLA, July 15 (FENA) – Based on the indictment of the Cantonal Prosecutor’s Office of the Tuzla Canton, the Supreme Court of the Federation of BiH issued a conviction verdict against Fikret Mrkonjić (65) from Banovići for the criminal act of war crimes against civilians and sentenced him to six years in prison.

The indictment of the Cantonal Prosecutor's Office of the Tuzla Canton charges Mrkonjić with having participated in Banja Luka in the beating of a Croat civilian during the war in BiH while acting as a member of the Military Police of the Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The victim was severely beaten by several persons, including Mrkonjić, with fists and batons behind a business facility.

He suffered injuries to which he succumbed later during that day.

The convict violated the rules of international law during the war and violated the provisions of the Geneva Convention on the Protection of Civilian Persons during the War and Additional Protocols on the Protection of Victims of Non-International Armed Conflict and participated in the killing of civilians, the Tuzla Canton Prosecutor's Office said.
