SARAJEVO, July 15 (FENA) - The third in a row "Race for Democracy" was held on Sunday at Wilson's Promenade in Sarajevo, at the initiative of the Embassy of the Republic of Turkey in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
It was a short-distance summer race, promoting the values of peace and democracy, that gathered participants from Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region, and was organized as part of a series of events marking the third anniversary of the unsuccessful coup attempt in Turkey on July 15, 2016.
The winner of this year's edition of the race in the women's competition was Olivera Jeftić from Serbia, while Selma Zrnić (Athletic Club - AK "Sarajevo") and Lucia Kimani (AK "Banja Luka") won the second and third place.
Stefan Čuković (AK "Istočno Sarajevo") was the winner in the men's competition, and the second and third place went to the Kenyan Stanley Kiprut and Uroš Gutić (AK "Bosna") from Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Haldun Koc, Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey to BiH, welcomed the competitors, reminding that "for the third year in a row, the Race for Democracy marked the anniversary of the attempted coup that has been stopped by the will of the people, and that this was also an opportunity to honor the heroes who sacrificed themselves selflessly in defending peace and democracy."
Thanking everyone who responded to the invitation of the Turkish Embassy, he said that this has already become a traditional race that represents yet another kind of solidarity and communion between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Turkey.
Ambassador Koc also marked the start of the race, and after its completion, he congratulated the winners who received medals and cash prizes, and he thanked everyone who took part in the race.
Before the start of the race, the national anthems of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Turkey were played, and the guests and participants paid tribute to the fallen victims in the coup attempt.
