Exhumation at Gradina site near Višegrad, a potential mass grave, continues

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, July 12 (FENA) - The exhumation at the site of Gradina in the municipality of Višegrad, which started two days ago, continued today. According to the information from the Institute for Missing Persons of Bosnia and Herzegovina, this is a site of a potential mass grave that contains the remains of the victims killed in Višegrad in 1992.

It is possible that this mass grave also contains the victims who were killed in 1995 in Srebrenica, stated the Institute for Missing Persons of BiH.

Given that the terrain is extremely difficult, rocky and inaccessible, today, special machinery has been brought from Goražde to break down the rocks that were destroyed by mines thus covering the mass grave site in order to cover up and conceal the bodies of the victims.

Excavations at this site will continue in the coming days to reach the mass grave.

The Exhumation is handled by the Prosecutor's Office of BiH under the order of the BiH Court.

The Institute’s Director, Amor Mašović said that the grave’s location was revealed by a witness.

The area around the mass grave is full of landmines, which makes the terrain almost inaccessible.

“The victims were killed and the area was then mined so that huge stones covered the victims' bodies. It is necessary to break those stones. We can't speak about the number of victims because the witness didn't want to speak about it either,” said Mašović.
