STOCKHOLM/SARAJEVO, July 12 (FENA) - The marking of the 24th anniversary of the genocide against Bosniaks in the ‘UN safe zone’ of Srebrenica was held in Stockholm as well, organized by the APU Network.
The participants paid tribute to the victims and said that the victims of the genocide in Srebrenica must not be forgotten, that the truth about Srebrenica must not be distorted and falsified and that only on the basis of truth and justice can peace and reconciliation be achieved.
This year's marking was attended by Dževa Avdić, author of the book "My smile is My Vengeance", who survived the genocide in Srebrenica as a girl, and Lejla Čengić from the Institute for Missing Persons of BiH.
Avdić told FENA that this year, for the first time, she decided not to spend July 11 in Srebrenica, and at the invitation of the APU Network, she attended the commemoration on the Day of Remembrance in Stockholm.
"It was time for me to do something more, maybe my voice could be heard louder and it could be more powerful from somewhere else," said Dževa Avdić, adding that it was the first time that she was not where she was supposed to be on July 11 – in Potočari.
She pointed out that twenty years after she survived the genocide in Srebrenica, she had the need to talk about what she felt, and that is how the book "My Smile is My Vengeance" came to be.
At the end of the marking, the attendants lowered the white lilies into Lake Mälaren in memory of the 8,372 killed victims of the Srebrenica genocide.
