SAD: Improve coordination level of all security agencies in BiH

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, June 17 (FENA) – Need for a higher and improved level of coordination in all law enforcement and security agencies in Bosnia and Herzegovina was one of the topics of today's meeting of the U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Matthew Palmer and the U.S. Ambassador to BiH Eric Nelson with high officials in BiH.

Meeting was attended by representatives of Ministry of Security of BiH, Border Police, Intelligence-Security Agency and ministries of interior of Brčko District, Federation of BiH and Republika Srpska.

It was emphasized that enhanced cooperation is most needed in solving the problem of increased number of migrants coming to BiH, but instead of cooperation, entities are working on forming reserve police forces.

“These reserve police forces will not solve the problem with migrants, because the issue of migration is transnational and it cannot be solved by one-sided efforts. Instead of that, BiH needs better trained, adequately equipped and interoperable police forces that are responsible to the citizens,“ it was emphasized in the press release of the U.S. Embassy.

Palmer and Nelson appealed to the officials to allocate state resources to share the burden which is now mostly carried by the local authorities.

Prior to this meeting, Palmer and Nelson were in Bihać, where they had the opportunity to hear firsthand it is necessary to improve cooperation and negative consequences that lack of cooperation can cause.

“They were told this is not about migrant crisis, but it is about a failure of state and entity institutions to act adequately and strategically. They agreed that better coordination and allocation of the existing resources is the best way for authorities to improve security of BiH,“ it was stated.

United States will continue providing assistance to law enforcement agencies that are trying to solve security problems in the right way with a higher level of coordination.
