Nelson on migrant crisis: Bihać and USC need action from state authorities

FENA Press release

BIHAĆ, June 14 (FENA) - Mayor of Bihać, Šuhret Fazlić, together with Davor Župa, chairman of the Bihać City Council, Armin Amidžić, director of the Tourism Board of Bihać and Ilda Alibegović, an MP in the USC Assembly, hosted today, the US Ambassador Eric Nelson and Matthew Palmer, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State of the United States.

The hosts informed their esteemed guests about the current situation with the migrant crisis, the challenges that Bihać as a local community faces with regards to the stay of illegal migrants, and the continuation of the cooperation with the US agencies such as USAID.

“We have once again received the support of the US Government and the administration through the Embassy in BiH and today I asked Ambassador Nelson to do everything in his power to ensure that the burden of the migrant crisis be taken off the City of Bihać, which has been left all alone by the state institutions for a year now. Also, I thanked for the previous USAID projects that were implemented in Bihać and that have given momentum for the development of the city, and especially a joint project in the Kombitex business zone,” said Mayor Fazlić.

He added that he expects the international institutions in BiH to invest the maximum effort and encourage the state authorities to do their job for which they are competent and obliged to do.

“I came to see firsthand the situation when it comes to the migrant crisis in Bihać and the Una-Sana Canton. I have heard a lot of information from the mayor and the prime minister how the citizens reacted to the arrival of migrants and how much the impact on this part of BiH all of this has had.

However, neither citizens nor the authorities in Bihać and USC can deal with this situation on their own. The international community helps, but what is most important is that there must be a strategy by the state institutions for this problem.

We will work to find better solutions for this situation. It is very clear that the city and cantonal authorities are focused on solving this problem with those resources they have at their disposal with the help of international organizations, and what is needed now is the reaction of state authorities that need to provide funds to the police and to other departments dealing with this issue,” said the US Ambassador to BiH.
