SARAJEVO, June 13 (FENA) - Strengthening the independence of anti-corruption bodies, increasing the number of professionals, cooperation with other institutions and political support are some of the conclusions that were supported today in the form of a draft at a conference devoted to strengthening the fight against corruption in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Government representatives, heads of anti-corruption bodies, representatives of the international community and NGOs gathered today at a conference in Sarajevo to discuss a more concrete and stronger fight against corruption in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is present in all segments of society.

The event titled "Strengthening Anti-Corruption in BiH: What do anti-corruption bodies need to combat corruption efficiently?" was chaired by the Head of the European Union Delegation to BiH, Lars-Gunnar Wigemark, who said that anti-corruption bodies must be independent from political influence.

He added that this conference could be the beginning of a more successful fight against corruption, but believes that in the forthcoming period, everyone should state openly whether they are against something that itself is imposed as an obvious thing because of some political reasons or lack of interest.

Wigemark believes that things would be different if there were more adjudicated cases before the courts, not referring to the indictments filed, but the finalized court proceedings in corruption cases.

Director of the Agency for the Prevention of Corruption and Coordination of the Fight against Corruption Hasim Sabotic stressed that there always existed a declarative commitment when it comes to the fight against corruption, but that the support is absent.

“Corruption is present in all segments of society and we have requested from government representatives to start with the professionalization of these anti-corruption bodies. This is not a burden on the budget, but it is a matter of passing a legal solution on the basis of which competence will be awarded where needed," explained Šabotić.

Today's event focused on the need to strengthen anti-corruption bodies in BiH, 14 of them, with particular reference to the latest European Commission report on BiH, where one of the recommendations refers to "the need to ensure the effective functioning and coordination of anti-corruption bodies in BiH".

As it was announced today, later this year, a similar conference should be organized to discuss the problems with corruption, when it will be clear whether everyone and without delay are ready to implement these recommendations.

The conference was organized by the European Union project "Institutional Support to Anti-Corruption - IPAK" and the Agency for the Prevention of Corruption and Coordination of the Fight against Corruption in cooperation with the EU Delegation to BiH.
