SARAJEVO, June 6 (FENA) - The Border Police of Bosnia and Herzegovina today marked the 19th anniversary of its establishment at a ceremony held in Sarajevo.

Throughout this period, the BiH BP has shown the ability to perform a wide range of border control tasks and monitoring of the state border in line with the highest European standards, even though it has often faced numerous problems.

“The BiH Border Police has grown into a recognizable organizational and functional stable institution regardless of all difficulties. Currently, we are short by some 400 employees, and we are happy that 100 new cadets will begin their education,” said the Director of the Border Police of BiH, Zoran Galić at today’s ceremony.

One of the biggest challenges is illegal migration, which, in his words, will be attracting their attention for an extended period of time.

“We will not be able to deal with this problem without cooperation at all levels of government in BiH, as well as neighboring countries and the European Union,” stressed Galić.

Increased activities due to illegal migration have led to the depletion of the capacities of the Border Police.

“We will have to restart the state policy on illegal migrants. This problem has been hampering the work of the Border Police for the past two years. To date, the number of illegal entries in BiH has almost doubled compared to the period last year. This means that the numbers are only increasing,” said Deputy Minister of Security of BiH Mijo Krešić.

He believes that BiH will have to devise a state-level policy to tackle illegal migration, and that a greater focus should be on mutual cooperation of all police agencies and the search for solutions.

“In addition to this, we have to understand that Croatia is working on meeting the conditions for joining the Schengen. This will be a completely new moment when the Schengen arrives on the border with BiH. I am afraid that at that moment, Bosnia and Herzegovina could become a hot spot. For now, illegal migrants enter and leave BiH,” said Krešić.

He also noted that the Border Police employees perform their duties professionally and in accordance with the available resources.
