SARAJEVO, June 2 (FENA) - Representatives of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) on Saturday in Sarajevo hosted an event in which, in the form of a message, UN Secretary-General António Guterres asked the BiH authorities to "tax the polluters, abolish subsidies for fossil fuels and stop building new thermal power plants in order to do everything  to reduce air pollution.

"Science has shown us that we are losing three thousand lives annually in Bosnia and Herzegovina due to air pollution. On this occasion, I invite all actors in BiH, primarily those in energy, spatial planning, development, and transport to engage in solving environmental problems," said Amina Omićević, a representative of the UN Environment Program in BiH on the occasion of the World Environment Day.

The FBiH Minister of Environment and Tourism Edita Đapo said that the spatial plan must be respected in order to take care of the environment and interventions in the designated space.

"The Ministry has drafted a new law on air protection, which will enable us to combat the emissions from the domestic sources. It is known that BiH is a signatory to the Paris Declaration and therefore committed itself to working on harmonizing spatial plans with environmental interventions," said Đapo.

Speaking of air pollution she said that we all would like to see the results very fast, but that it is a long-lasting process.

"This is a global problem, especially for small countries that have a low gross domestic product," Đapo added.

Responsible environmental institutions supported the activities of the Breathe Life Campaign, which officially began on Saturday in the Sarajevo Canton on the occasion of the World Environment Day.

Timothy Oliver, a representative of the United States of America, expressed satisfaction with a chance to support the activities for improving air quality in BiH.
