Germany supports humanitarian demining in BiH with additional 500,000 euros

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, May 28 (FENA) - Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in BiH, Christiane Hohmann yesterday signed a contract with Norwegian People's Aid (NPA) Regional Director Sven Jonas Zachrisson, the embassy stated today.

Under this contract, Germany will provide NPA with additional funding of 500,000 euros and will continue the long-term engagement in the field of humanitarian demining.

This financial assistance enables NPA, with the help of the so-called land clearance process in the municipalities of Konjic and Žepče/Zavidovići, to clear up the areas previously visited by the German Embassy representatives. Thanks to this financial assistance, it is possible to clear from landmines about two square kilometers of area.

An internationally recognized process of land clearance enables the clearing of mine suspected areas in the most efficient way.

In addition, MapInfo software will also be purchased this year, so that the known and selected areas can be uploaded into the online mine action system.

This Mine Action Information System serves to record mine suspected areas throughout the country and at the same time provides an overview of the clearing status for a certain area.

The German Federal Government has supported humanitarian demining in Bosnia and Herzegovina since 1997. So far, it has made available about 35.5 million euros for this purpose.
