BANJA LUKA, May 21 (FENA) - President of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) Suay Aksoy said today that the role of museums is to help facilitate peace and coexistence to conflict-burdened areas.

After visiting the Museum of Contemporary Art of RS in Banja Luka, she emphasized that she is visiting Banja Luka on the occasion of marking the International Museum Day, whose purpose is to foster intercultural exchange, understanding and cooperation, as well as the promotion of cultural events and heritage around the world.

This year's topic is "Museums as cultural hubs: a blend of contemporary and traditional," and this is also the theme of the ICOM General Conference in Kyoto, which will be held in September, with about 3,500 participants expected.

“The theme of the event will be contemporary problems in museology, as well as major changes in the 21st century, including the sustainability of museums, risk assessment, gender equality, human rights and other topical issues affecting museums and how to cope with all these changes,"Aksoy said.

She also noted that ICOM is helping local communities and museums, and that in the past period, they visited museums in the region, and met with the directors of these institutions in Belgrade, Zagreb and Ljubljana, and this is her first official visit to BiH.

Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art of RS Sarita Vujković stated that the museums in this BiH entity are making an effort to be institutions that will follow all the recommendations of ICOM.

She added that Suay Aksoy will have an opportunity to visit the exhibition "Perception", which will officially be presented in September at the General Conference of ICOM in Kyoto.

"We will present our ideas, the development of museology and the role of museums in our society," Vujković said, adding that Suay Aksoy will also be presented with the Zmijanje embroidery, which is on the UNESCO World Intangible Heritage List.
