SARAJEVO, May 16 (FENA) - A new project titled "EU4Justice: Supporting the Fight against Organized Crime and Corruption in BiH", was presented today in Sarajevo in the framework of the European Union's continued support for the rule of law in BiH, funded by the European Union with 2.2 million euros.

The two-year project, said Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to BiH Khaldoun Sinno, Ambassador of the Republic of France to BiH Guillame Rousson and EU4Justice Project Leader, French Prosecutor Isabelle Arnal, aims to improve the efficiency, integrity and professionalism of institutions in the BiH justice sector.

Strengthening of supervision and control in prosecutor offices, strengthening the capacity of resources and independence of disciplinary prosecutor offices, joint interdisciplinary training in order to better respond to organized crime, corruption and the most common forms of criminal offenses against the economy are just some of the components of this project.

The project, as said, represents a challenge for judges and prosecutors, as it aims to improve existing practices and results regarding the seizure of illegally gained property, as well as a monitoring mechanism that will improve mutual access to criminal records for law enforcement agencies, prosecutor offices and courts.

Sinno and Rousson said that the key to BiH's accession into the EU is the rule of law, but the essence of the project is also to restore citizens' confidence in judicial institutions.

“We need citizens who will put pressure on institutions; we need fearless prosecutors who will dare to act and be independent and to take the necessary steps. Therefore, this is not just an EU-France project, but it is a project of all of us," Sinno said, adding that the project is also crucial for economic development, as investors want their investments to be protected.

The participants also emphasized that the project is special in terms of implementation as it is implemented by the GIP Justice Coopération Internationale (GIP JCI), and more than 25 activities are planned that will cover all judicial institutions in BiH, the High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council, prosecutor’s offices, courts, ministries of justice, law enforcement agencies and the Agency for the Prevention of Corruption and Coordination of the Fight against Corruption.

Consultations will also be held with French experts. Prosecutor Arnal will work with numerous institutions, especially with the High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council of BiH, in order to improve the efficiency, integrity and professionalism of institutions in the rule of law sector in BiH.

Sinno, Rousson and Arnal called on all the institutions and the media to cooperate because they are convinced that the project will improve the effectiveness of investigation process and prosecution of cases of serious corruption and organized crime through enhanced cooperation across the entire criminal justice system.
