SARAJEVO, May 16 (FENA) – President of High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council (HJPC) BiH Milan Tegeltija stated in Sarajevo today that HJPC is deeply convinced that there is a need for transparency of property and income of judicial workers.

He added that is the standard of the European Union which is clearly stated in recommendations.

Ahead of a roundtable "Public has the right to know: property charts of judicial workers", organized by the Center for Investigative Reporting (CIN), Tegeltija stated they have worked on implementation of recommendations of the European Commission over the last year, which also referred to transparency of income and property of judicial workers.

CIN presented a new data base "Property of Judges and Prosecutors", which so far includes data on 29 judges and prosecutors.

Editor-in-Chief of the Center for Investigative Reporting (CIN) Aladin Abdagić said the aim of this base is to present what judges and prosecutors own to the public.

"I am only talking about what we were able to prove through documents," said Abdagić.

He noted they would update the base regularly so the citizens are able to see the property charts.

President of BiH HJPC Milan Tegeltija said that he as the individual wanted to show that judicial workers have nothing to hide.

He emphasized it is not prohibited to have property and income if they are obtained legally.

Director of the Personal Data Protection Agency of BiH Petar Kovačević said they should start with law regulations.

"When we are talking about transparency, we should refer to the Law on Freedom of Access to Information. It regulates that all information of the public body are available, except in cases when there are certain exceptions," said Kovačević.

Ambassador of Holland to BiH Reinout Vos believes that authorities need to put efforts to increase the degree of trust in public institutions.

Chairman of the Transparency International Srdjan Blagovčanin assessed that situation in judiciary is far from what they want it to be and that citizens have very low degree of trust in judicial institutions and one of the ways of addressing that is making judiciary more transparent.
