Citizens of Tuzla mark the 27th anniversary of the defense of the city

FENA Press release

TUZLA, May 15 (FENA) - With laying of wreaths at the memorials and honoring the killed soldiers and the veterans of the defensive war, Tuzla today marked May 15, the day when the city of Tuzla was defended, as one of the most important dates in the recent history of the city, when its citizens stood in defense of their city and opposed the war.

Former Tuzla Mayor Selim Bešlagić said that he is proud of all the people who showed on that May 15 how to defend human dignity and all the people.

“I am grateful to all citizens of Tuzla and all the defense forces because they have proven that BiH precisely because of the Tuzla model of defending itself, received the support from the international community,” said Bešlagić.

On May 15, 1992, Niko Jurić was the Commander of the Second Maneuvering Unit that stood at the site of Brčanska Malta at a time when the JNA army was leaving Tuzla. He says that on that day everyone wanted only to defend Tuzla and its citizens.

“I was here at this spot, at Brčanska Malta. The policemen were deployed along the road. Our basic task was to ensure the departure of the JNA convoy from the city. Somewhere around 19.00 hrs., shots were heard, and I then warned the police officers that nobody can shoot and that the convoy must leave Tuzla in peace. Normally, the policemen executed my order. However, shots were constantly heard, and the command to hold the fire no longer made sense. Chaos has already been created,” explains Jurić who today lives in Poreč but he still often comes to Tuzla.

After 27 years, the Prosecutor's Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina confirmed that there no crime was committed in Brčanska Malta. On the other hand, the judicial institutions of Serbia still keep an open file on the case of Brčanska Malta and the Serbian prosecution is still conducting proceedings only against Selim Bešlagić, for whom the Serbian warrant is still pending.

“In BiH, the proceeding has been completed as far as the city of Tuzla is concerned. But there is another process in the BiH Prosecutor's Office that was launched against Mile Dubajić as one of the main culprits who took on himself to take the convoy of the JNA on May 15 out of Tuzla. This proceeding was launched in 2007, but nothing has happened yet. Nevertheless, I am very pleased today because the BiH Prosecutor's Office has also confirmed that everything surrounding the case of 'Brčanska Malta', as far as our side is concerned, has been proven to be completely clean and clear,” Bešlagić pointed out.
