Lévy performs his play "Looking for Europe" in Sarajevo

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, May 14 (FENA) - French author and philosopher Bernard-Henri Lévy performed his play "Looking for Europe" at the Sarajevo National Theater last night.

Lévy has been a unique figure and one of the greatest moral voices of our time for over four decades.

Ahead of European parliamentary elections, play "Looking for Europe" is about modern Europe and dangers it is dealing with due to rise of nationalism and populism. Play is a call to all advocates of democracy to scatter demons of totalitarianism, war and poverty, and focus on the European values of humanism and inclusion, with BiH as a leading example of co-existence and liberalism.

This play is part of his tour and campaign for Europe in 20 European cities. Bernard-Henri Lévy travelled across the continent from 5th March to 21st May 2019 and performed his play in the European capitals and cities of historic importance. Play is directed by Maria de Franca.

Text of the play is adapted to specific context of the country it is performed in, but his loyalty and dedication to BiH is the permanent topic of this play.

"Sarajevo is a stem cell. Or revolutionary vaccine. I put a drop of Sarajevo on all dying European institutions. I install a cell of Bosnia into every country in Europe which is dealing with dark flood of populism, sovereignty and fascism. And that is it... small wonders of civilization that is Bosnia start to grow, to expand." (Act V)

"Citizens of Sarajevo gave an example of resistance and graciousness to the world. That is invaluable. That is the meaning of this play and its substance. And that is why the play I carry from city to city has the name Sarajevo written in its heart, I sang it, chanted it and sobbed on all stages of Europe – we are all in debt to residents and spirit of Sarajevo. That is why I am deeply honored to be back on May 13 performing for you," said Bernard-Henri Lévy.

Last-night's performance was attended by numerous guests, including Chairman of the House of Peoples of the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH Bakir Izetbegović and his wife, Director of the Clinical Center of the University in Sarajevo Sebija Izetbegović and Chairman of the Council of Ministers of BiH Denis Zvizdić.
