FOČA, April 22 (FENA) - Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey in BiH, Haldun Koç visited Gorazde and Foča today. Accompanied by Mufti of Goražde, Remzija effendi Pitić and the Director of the Waqf Directorate in BiH Senaid Zajimović, Ambassador Koç visited the newly reconstructed Aladža Mosque, whose opening ceremony was planned on May 4 and expressed his joy over the fact that this religious building has been rebuilt and restored thanks to the help of Turkey.

“Reopening of the Aladža Mosque will be the most beautiful example of tolerance, mutual respect and care for the heritage and an exceptional opportunity to send a positive message to the whole world. As a cultural and historical monument and part of the world heritage, Aladža will certainly give a lot to Foča in the sense of the town’s tourism potential, said Ambassador Koç.

Mufti Pitić confirmed that the Organizing Committee, established by the Riyasat of the Islamic Community in BiH to organize the opening ceremony, is finalizing the preparations for the reception of numerous guests and faithful, high-level officials from BiH, Turkey and other countries.

“Aladža is a testimony of our renewal and rising from the ashes. We will do everything in our power to make it live the life that it once lived. During the month of Ramadan, Aladža will be full of good people every night who love God's dwellings,” said the Mufti of Goražde.

The Aladža Mosque, which represents a part of indelible cultural heritage of BiH, is a monument that is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It has risen again in the town of Foča thanks to the General Directorate of the Waqf of the Republic of Turkey and the Waqf Directorate of the Islamic Community in BiH, as well as the workers of the companies that took part in its reconstruction.

Thirteen mosques including the Aladža Mosque were destroyed during the war in the period 1992-1995, and the campaign of ethnic cleansing by the Serb forces. The 22,500 Bosniaks who made up the majority of inhabitants were forced to flee the town.

The Aladža Mosque was mined and completely demolished in 1992, under the orders of the local Serb authorities, and the works on its reconstruction began in 2014.

It was first built by Hasan Nezir, a close associate of Mimar Sinan in 1549, and it was known as one of the most beautiful and valuable buildings of oriental culture in the Balkans.

Ambassador Koç today spoke with Mayor of Foča, Radisav Mašić and President of the Municipal Assembly, Izet Spahić. During his stay in Gorazde, he also met with Prime Minister of the Bosnian Podrinje Canton Emir Oković, and after that he visited Višegrad.
