BH Journalists Assoc. condemns unprofessional behavior of Chief Prosecutor Tadić

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, April 22 (FENA) - The Steering Board of the association of BH Journalists and the Help Line for Assistance to Journalists have strongly condemned the unauthorized interference of the BiH Prosecutor's Office with the work of journalists and media in Bosnia and Herzegovina, including unprofessional statements made by the Chief Prosecutor of the BiH Prosecutor's Office, Gordana Tadić.

They remind that at the press conference on April 19 in Sarajevo, Prosecutor Tadić once again tried to discredit journalists, to give them instructions and orders how they should work and to whom they should provide information obtained through a legitimate investigative procedure for the benefit of the media and the public, with the aim of covering up unprofessional and incompetent behavior of the Prosecutor's Office of BiH in dealing with crime and corruption, especially in two specific cases that deal with falsifying of university diplomas and the case of misuse of intelligence community operations (Croatia’s intelligence operations with alleged Salafi movement members).

“We were appalled with the level of ignorance that came from Prosecutor Tadić about the freedom of the media and the role of investigative journalism, including the obligation of the media to provide the public with all information of public importance without the prior need, or as she put it, the obligation to inform the Prosecutor's Office of BiH, Prosecutor Tadić and her associates or any other state or public authority and institution,” stressed the BH Journalists Association.

The BH Journalists' Steering Board demands from the Prosecutor's Office of BiH to bring down its communication with journalists and media within the framework of professional rules, competences and civility, taking into account the needs of the media and the right of the public to be informed on issues of importance to the safety of citizens, the lawful actions of the judiciary and the functioning of the rule of law as a whole.

At the same time, the Association demands an urgent response to the inquiry of the Journalists’ Help Line from March 25, 2018, on why the Prosecutor's Office and Prosecutor Tadić did not conduct an investigation into the illegal and unlawful interrogation of the journalists of ‘Žurnal’ internet portal Azra Omerović and Avdo Avdić in the premises of the Prosecutor's Office of BiH, and which legal actions they plan to undertake against the prosecutors who violated the BiH Criminal Code, stated the BH Journalists Association.
