Trnavci: HEART program helps migrant children to release trauma

SARAJEVO, April 14 (FENA) – There are currently around 120 migrant children engaged in the education process in Una-Sana Canton (USC). Originally there were 140 of them, and the number keeps changing.

Secretary of Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of USC Albijana Trnavci told FENA that they are working with migrant children after the so called HEART program, recovery and learning through art.

“It is a program we introduced in our schools together with Save the Children organization. International organizations have definitely provided great support in the process of inclusion of migrant children in the education process in Una Sana Canton and we secured implementation of Convention on the Rights of the Child,” she emphasized.

She pointed out that these teachers have completed necessary training and that there are teams of translators. Many children already speak local language very well. Children who reached certain level can engage in regular teaching process within the school they are attending in area of Bihać.

“HEART study method helps children who have been through painful situation to heal. It helps them to release trauma, to adapt to the area they are in and reach certain level of education,” she added.

International Organization for Migration is organizing transportation from school to the center where these children live, daily meals, etc.
