SARAJEVO, April 9 (FENA) - Exhibition "Breaking Free: Children Born of War", inspired by stories of children born of war, and their mothers and their silent battles, invisible in society filled with stigma and discrimination, opened in BiH History Museum yesterday.
Association "Forgotten Children of War" organized the exhibition, in cooperation with photographer from Vienna Sakher Almone, who said "...let's get out from the darkness to the light that shines upon us, let us forget war – we are all tired".
"Idea of the exhibition came from a scream that was kept for 25 years, invisibility, stigma, discrimination. We wanted to show through photography and art what is means to be silent for 25 years, what it means to come out with mothers who were raped and send a loud and clear message," said Ajna Jusić, president of the Association.
Biggest and most important step towards this was a roundtable with mothers and children born of war – children who were born as a result of rape during the war and children whose biological fathers are members of foreign humanitarian units who stayed in BiH from 1992 to 1995, pointing to consequences of legal flaws within the system in BiH.
History Museum of BiH opened its doors for these topics, facing the past, and director of this institution Elma Hašimbegović said that it is everyone's responsibility to continue supporting these children, their fight and raise awareness.
"These are the most painful topics in our society. We have dealt with victims, war veterans but this time we are dealing with children who were born as a result of war," she said.
Exhibition will be open until April 14th.
