Zvizdić: At the moment, there are less than 4,000 migrants in BiH

SARAJEVO, April 8 (FENA) - Chairman of the BiH Council of Ministers Denis Zvizdić, referring to the ongoing problems with migrants, today told reporters in Sarajevo that if the EU countries continue with full closing of their borders for the migrants, "we will go with the complete closing of our border with our eastern neighbors."

“We will monitor the situation. We have already asked the BiH Presidency to approve the engagement of members of the Armed Forces, but the engineering units, not the armed units, but those who will curb the illegal entry at the locations where illegal migrants arrive from Serbia,” said Zvizdić.

He said that there was no reason for the representatives of the RS MoI, together with the representatives of the cantonal MoIs and the representatives of the MoI of the Federation of BiH, not to be providing assistance to the Border Police.

“We need up to 1,000 new police officers at the border, together with representatives of engineering units to prevent the illegal entry and shield the border,” said Zvizdić.

He pointed out that it is not true that there are some 200,000 migrants currently in BiH, or that 200,000 migrants have entered the country. As of January 2018, some 25 to 26 thousand have entered BiH in total, but fewer than 4,000 are currently in BiH.

“We have completed our part of the job that the cantons demanded, especially the Una-Sana Canton. We have taken control over all the centers in the USC area in terms of the public and social order. Out of a total of 13 million Euros that were granted to Bosnia and Herzegovina, BiH has received only two million for the domestic institutions, eleven million euros was allocated to international organizations, and we have no control over the spending of these funds,” said Zvizdić.

He noted that UNHCR and IOM are in fact in charge, they are the ones renting the space for the centers and they are accommodating refugees.

“We ask that these funds are not allocated to them, but that these funds are allocated to the BiH institutions in order to be able to control this process altogether. The migrant situation is still under control but we do not know what might happen if a new wave of migration heads on from Greece. We will monitor the situation and, of course, we will be closing the borders of BiH towards the east, if the borders of BiH towards the west are closed. We will do this as a reciprocal response,” said the Chairman of the BiH Council of Ministers.

He added that the influx of migrants who were arriving as tourists to Serbia and then migrated to BiH has reduced. There were more than 4,500 of such cases.

“We are negotiating with the authorities of the Republic of Serbia and this number has decreased. But, we will monitor the situation. On the other hand, I want to strongly reject the allegations of some thousands of potentially dangerous terrorists returning to BiH from Syria,” said Zvizdić.

He once again underlined that this is a total fabrication, "a blatant lie directed against the interests of BiH".

“Up to date, 46 of them returned to BiH, and there are still 104 BiH nationals in Syria, of whom 58 are women and children. We will systematically process them in cooperation and agreement with our international partners,” said Zvizdić.

Referring to the ongoing migrant situation, he says that the matter is still under control, "but we cannot guarantee that it will remain so if it is true that Greece will open its borders and let tens of thousands of migrants to move towards the Balkans on the Balkan route."

"We are fully monitoring the situation and we will certainly be competent to control this issue in the coming months," concluded Zvizdić.
