SARAJEVO, April 7 (FENA) - The 'Sarajevo International Airport then and now' would be the best way to start a story about the 50th anniversary of the airport. In every part of this story, its beginnings, the duration, its present existence is thoroughly marked by the people. In the 1950s, the Sarajevo Airport was a vision of several people who made their vision into reality at the end of the 1960s.

"The construction of the airport began in 1965 and was finalized on June 2, 1969, when the Sarajevo International Airport was officially opened for civilian air traffic," said the Director of the Sarajevo International Airport, Armin Kajmakovic, in an interview with FENA.
He recalls that the Sarajevo Airport had a huge significance for the city as a window into the world and new opportunities for the development of civil aviation in the region.
During that time, in terms of the equipment and contents, the Sarajevo Airport has been ranked among the finest in this part of Europe. The traffic grew year by year and then came the war.
All the airport capacities were completely destroyed, and it was a great challenge to provide the minimum conditions for the provision of basic airport services, and then to do reconstruction projects.
Today, the Sarajevo International Airport is a respectable company with the continuous growth of traffic each year.
"Many international airlines have recognized this and today we have a connection with a large number of European and world metropolises. Last year we served more than a million passengers, which is a record number since the opening of the airport.
In particular, I would like to point out that without the vision of the management, and our reliance on continuous improvement of airport capacities, without clear commitment, without the dedicated work of all its employees, such growth would not be possible," emphasized the Director Kajmaković.
Kajmaković also noted that the 50th birthday is welcomed in full meaning of the word because the implementation of the projects for upgrading, expanding and increasing all airport capacities in both spatial and technological terms is in progress.
An additional 10,000 square meters of space will be made available, as the Sarajevo International Airport has reached and exceeded its capacities with the existing terminal (up to one million passengers per year).
Upon completing these construction works, the efficiency of the airport will significantly increase and e will further improve the level and quality of services provided to our business partners and customers.
"Since 1969, a lot of employees have passed through this company, they have gained working experience, they have improved, worked and retired. I wish to all of us a happy anniversary. I want more business successes, another million passengers in the near future, new air links and a greater offer of our services," concluded the Director of the Sarajevo International Airport Armin Kajmaković.
