SARAJEVO, March 28 (FENA) - Bosnia and Herzegovina and Greece this year will mark 27 years of the establishment of diplomatic relations, but good relations must not stagnate, and much more can be done to bring the countries closer to one another, said the Greek ambassador to BiH Georgios Iliopoulos at a reception held this evening on the occasion of Greek Independence Day - March 25.
The country celebrates its declaration of independence of 1821.
“We are proud that during this chapter in our history, Greece advocated for and supported the most basic values of humanity: freedom, dignity and democracy,” said Iliopoulos.
In this long history, he stressed, the Balkans to us has always played a central role in foreign policy, including today's Western Balkans.
He said that they believe in this region, people and potential, and that based on that, the Greek people have always advocated for its future, which, as he pointed out, could only be a European one.
“Greece recognized the independence of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1992, and today, we celebrate 27 years of the extraordinary diplomatic relations. After the war, we tried to help, mainly through assistance in education and healthcare," said Iliopoulos.
Speaking about the development of trade and tourist relations, the ambassador announced the opening of a direct air link between Sarajevo and Athens in June this year by Aegean Airlines.
Numerous representatives of political and public life, as well as representatives of international organizations and embassies in BiH attended the reception on the occasion of the Greek National Day.
