SARAJEVO, March 21 (FENA) - Misunderstanding, lack of awareness and insufficient education are the reasons why there no significant results have been achieved in the fight against discrimination in the last ten years, it was said today in Sarajevo at a presentation of the Report "Assessment of the work of institutions in BiH in the fight against discrimination", organized by the OSCE Mission on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the adoption of laws in this field.

Head of the OSCE Mission to BiH, Bruce G. Berton, expressed content that they have supported BiH in adopting the Law on Prohibition of Discrimination, as well as monitoring its implementation.

He explained that the Report examines the roles of three institutions, the judiciary, the Ombudsman Institution for Human Rights and the BiH Ministry of Human Rights and Refugees.

Although a lot has been done, Berton emphasizes that much more needs to be done in the future and that the Report contains substantive recommendations on how to move on from here. He added that the OSCE Mission remains a partner to these institutions and will continue to assist them in terms of implementing the Law on the Prohibition of Discrimination in BiH.

The Human Rights Ombudsman in BiH Ljubinko Mitrović believes that not enough has been done on the implementation of the laws and that a lot more needs to be done in the coming period.

He emphasizes that the Ombudsman Institution is the main institution for the fight against discrimination in BiH, and that in the following period they will continue to work to become the institutional bearer of the fight against discrimination, and they need assistance from both, the state bodies and the OSCE Mission.

“In many cases of discrimination, we are witnessing terrible irresponsibility of various levels of government and in many areas there are systemic violations of human rights,” he said.

Mitrović cited mobbing as one of the more frequent forms of discrimination, especially in recent years, as well as various other forms of harassment.

The Report identifies the shortcomings that BiH has yet to address in the anti-discrimination mechanisms, and provides recommendations to key institutions in order to achieve improvements in this area.

Some 100 representatives of judicial and legal experts and representatives of competent public institutions and civil society organizations gathered at the presentation of the report which formally concludes tomorrow.
