Džaferović: Verdict in the case of Radovan Karadžić is just and well-deserved

SARAJEVO, March 21 (FENA) - Member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Šefik Džaferović at a press conference yesterday stated that war criminal Radovan Karadžić has earned a punishment that he was sentenced – the verdict of life imprisonment before the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals in The Hague.

Džaferović, however, believes that only partial justice has been achieved because The Hague Tribunal court did not qualify widespread and systemic war crimes in other seven municipalities in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Prijedor, Ključ, Foča, Vlasenica, Bratunac, Zvornik and Sanski Most), except in Srebrenica, as the crimes of genocide.

"We can find some satisfaction, all the victims of his crimes, all of us who suffered the four-year aggression on our country," said Džaferović.

Džaferović emphasizes that he does not consider the verdict to Karadžić as a verdict to the Serb people, but he underlined that the complete political wartime leadership of Republika Srpska was tried for joint criminal enterprise, genocide and crimes against humanity, together with the majority of the military leadership of Republika Srpska.

"This is a verdict against a political project, not against the Serb people," said Džaferović, adding that this political project began with Slobodan Milošević's regime in Belgrade, and was conducted by Radovan Karadžić and Ratko Mladić on the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“The judgment to Karadžić, as well as all previous judgments, is a strong message to all those who even think about attacking Bosnia and Herzegovina and to their attempts to disintegrate or divide it,” said Džaferović, adding that such plans will never succeed and that their actors will end up on the dark side of history and serving lifetime prison sentences.

Džaferović believes it is necessary for all in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region to face and accept these facts established by the courts and the evidence of the committed genocide and other war crimes, as a crucial prerequisite for building trust for the sake of the future.
