SARAJEVO, March 11 (FENA) - The latest survey conducted in Bosnia and Herzegovina has shown that as much as 47.2 percent of women have experienced some form of violence, but what worries is the fact that a quarter of these women think that violence is something that should remain a matter to be dealt within family.

These are just some of the data presented at today's press conference organized to promote the Resource Package for the health care providers in the Federation of BiH to help their response to gender-based violence, which includes sexual violence in the war.

The survey also showed that only one in 20 women report violence to the police, seven out of 10 abused women have long-term consequences with mental health, and six out of ten abused women have suffered some form of physical consequences, or bruises or other injuries.

When presenting this document, consisted of 1,200 pages, which gathers the findings of experts in the area of gender-based violence, Assistant FBiH Health Minister Goran Čerkez explained that this is the first such document done in BiH and the region.

The document brings knowledge of how to work with the victim, but also how to detect and collaborate between institutions and sectors, because the issue of violence is not only a matter of the health sector, it is a matter of the social and education sector and society as whole.

“We have already started activities in four cantons, and cooperation with the social sectors has begun,” added Čerkez, noting that BiH has the capacity to seriously approach this issue, as it has more than 70 mental health centers, more than any other country in the region.

In addition to the FBiH Ministry of Health, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) also assisted in the preparation of the document.

Aynabat Annamuhamedova, a representative of the Fund in BiH, said that around 240 service providers have been trained to work with victims of violence.

"Violence does not come out of nowhere, it is based on some of the forms of inequalities between women and men, and women bear physical and psychological consequences, therefore long-term efforts are needed to combat this type of violence," Annamuhamedova said.

The preparation of this document was also supported by the Embassy of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in BiH, and Ambassador Matthew Field confirmed that the document contains practical instructions to adequately provide support to persons who suffered gender-based violence.

The package presented today is a tool for internal structuring and establishing a mechanism for dealing with cases of sexual violence, which can be gender-based or it had occurred during armed conflict, includes protocols, procedural standards, and training packages for response in the health sector of the Federation of BiH.
