Berton warns of negative and discriminatory reporting on Roma population

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, February 25 (FENA) - “The OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina is closely following the case of a recent shooting in Brčko District BiH.  Some media reporting on the case have been both negative and discriminatory toward the Roma population, resulting in the spread of further negative commentary on social media, it is said in a statement by Ambassador Bruce G. Berton, Head of the OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina, in connection to certain media reports about the shooting that took place last week in the Brčko District of BiH.

The Mission calls upon all citizens to work toward inter-cultural dialogue, tolerance and mutual understanding with respect to the culture and history of different ethnic groups in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

We fully stand in support of the principle of freedom of expression, but will also speak out against discriminatory comments which create an atmosphere of fear among the country’s different ethnic groups and national minorities.

We trust the citizens of Brčko District BiH will continue to uphold the fundamental principles of non-discrimination for all, stated Ambassador Berton.
