FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, February 12 (FENA) - The third Steering Committee Meeting of the joint program of the European Union and Council of Europe “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey”, will be held on Wednesday, 13 February 2019, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Sarajevo.

At the meeting, the results of the Horizontal Facility program in Bosnia and Herzegovina will be reviewed, while all of the Actions under this program will present their achievements, namely in the field of prisons, anti-discrimination, education and national minorities. The total envelope for the country under the Horizontal Facility amounts to 2.7 million euros.

Press statements will be given in the press corner and the attendees will be addressed by Mr. Almir Šahović, Assistant Minister for Multilateral Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Verena Taylor, Director of the Office of the Directorate General of Programs of the Council of Europe, Mr. Nicolas Bizel, Head of Operations Section for Justice and Home Affairs and Public Administration Reform of the Delegation of the European Union to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Some important results have been achieved, such as enhanced capacities of the Institution of Human Rights Ombudsperson and courts to prevent and combat discrimination thanks to a mechanism for data collection on hate crimes and discrimination cases now gathered in a single database. Capacities of prison and police officers were also strengthened to adapt their working methods to European standards conducive to prisoners’ rehabilitation rather than punishment.

Participants at the meeting will include representatives of the beneficiary institutions directly involved in the implementation of this joint program of the European Union and Council of Europe, such as the Ministries of Justice at the state and entities level, the Institution of Human Rights Ombudsman, Ministry of Human Rights and Refugees of BiH and Ministry of Civil Affairs of BiH, announced the Council of Europe Office in BiH.
