Hadžović: NATO has stepped up for BiH, but we have to do our homework

SARAJEVO, January 14 (FENA) - Denis Hadžović, Director of the Center for Security Studies (CSS), said in an interview with FENA that NATO has stepped up for Bosnia and Herzegovina and reduced its political expectations of BiH a bit, because they saw the condition set nine years ago were too much of a task for BiH political elite.

“Therefore, they lent us a hand once again, and made it easier for us to continue on our path of NATO integration, but they said that we had to fulfill our obligations, that is, to adopt the Annual National Program and send it to Brussels for approval. Expectations from Bosnia and Herzegovina have been lowered, but they want to see that a political agreement can be reached in BiH,” said Hadžović.

In his words, if there were political will, the Annual National Program could have already been adopted. He says he is a bit pessimistic about what can be expected in the upcoming period.

“We see that the position of politicians from the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Republika Srpska are very contradictory, so I am not sure that we can achieve consensus in a given period. Especially since there is no dialogue about these controversial facts, along with controversial approaches and what politicians from RS and the Federation of BiH expect, at least declaratively, from what we can hear from the media, we see that their views are very much different,” says Hadžović.

He points out that BiH will have increased the scope of cooperation, with a greater engagement between BiH and NATO, and "the scope of the partnership goals going on for several years now will have also expanded."

He added that a message would be sent that the state is engaged in these integration processes.

He believes that we in BiH do not have serious politicians, "we do not have particularly responsible politicians, and we do not have the continuity of foreign policy and a common vision of the future of BiH."

We see, he added, that every convocation adopts some of their own specific policies, which are often based on daily politics and in the service of political parties alone and those citizens that support certain political party.

Speaking of security challenges, Hadžović says that BiH, as a small country, cannot develop all the capabilities in order to properly protect itself from all the threats that exist.

“That is why joint approach is one of the ways to ensure as much safety as possible for the citizens, to rely on our partners and to contribute in those areas where we can help and support the collective defense. If you do not have security, it is very difficult to expect that you can influence some decisions and that you can provide certain qualities to your citizens such as freedom, peace and security, the greatest postulates, which every society rests upon,” concluded Hadžović.
