SARAJEVO, November 20 (FENA) - Recognitions for successful cooperation on the Municipal Environmental and Economic Management Project (MEG) were awarded to 18 partner units of local self-government (municipalities and cities) in BiH, and the most successful units of local self-government were municipalities: Tešanj, Sanski Most and Žepće.

The recognition for successful cooperation on the MEG project was awarded to the heads of the municipalities: Bosanska Krupa, Gradačac, Gradačac, Gradiška, Kalesija, Kostajnica, Kozarska Dubica, Prnjavor, Sanski Most, Teslić, Tešanj and Žepče, and to mayors of Bihać, Cazin, Doboj, Prijedor and Tuzla who had the opportunity to present the results of the work of local self governments. It is a project financed by the Government of Switzerland and implemented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

Municipalities and cities involved in the MEG project worked tirelessly to improve the provision of public services, listened to the needs of the population in local communities and worked on better management of results.

This, as it has been said, has led to better integration, inclusion of vulnerable groups and responding to their needs, as well as improvements in utility services.

It has led to the reconstruction of the water supply network, the reduction of water losses and the rehabilitation of the sewage network, but also investments in the business environment, support for entrepreneurship, incentives, and employment.

Municipalities of Tešanj, Sanski Most and Žepče have been the most successful units of local self-government.

Deputy UNDP Resident Representative in BiH Sukhrob Khoshmukhamedov pointed out that these local governments set standards and examples to others when it comes to the introduction of EU practices, and directly influence Bosnia and Herzegovina's accession to the European Union and achieve the goals of sustainable development.

Senior Advisor for Social Inclusion and Administration in the Swiss Embassy in BiH Dimka Stantchev Skeie pointed out that, in four years (from 2016 to 2020), Switzerland is to invest 12 million Swiss francs through the MEG project in support of the local self governments with a population of 846,000 people.

"Our partner local self-government units will also direct budget funds and invest in drinking water, construction of sewage systems, better environmental protection and healthcare of the population, and creating better business conditions. This is an important step forward in local development," she said.
