SARAJEVO, November 20 (FENA) - Minister of Human Rights and Refugees of BiH Semiha Borovac signed a protocol on protection of human rights defenders with presidents of Local Democracy Foundation and Network of Female Police Officers Jasmina Mujezinović and Kristina Jozić, which means that BiH is ready to build a system and mechanisms of protection of human rights defenders.
"Those mechanisms refer to the EU standards, which relate to acknowledging status of human rights defenders, as well as protection of rights of others. This is the first step of institutions to protect persons who are protecting those who need protection," said Borovac.
Signatories agreed to form an advisory board which will be made of representatives of Ministry of Human Rights and Refugees of BiH, state institutions and human rights defenders.
Borovac expects the board will prevent human rights defenders from being exposed to different forms of attacks or disturbances.
"Signing of the protocol is a result of a two-year program we implemented with representatives of institutions and non-governmental organizations. Risk analysis was done and documents have been made regarding detected procedures towards improving protection," said president of the Local Democracy Foundation Jasmina Mujezinović.
Considering that Kingdom of Holland provided financial support in the aforementioned activities, Ambassador of Holland to BiH Reinout Vos said that the protocol will secure mechanisms that will provide protection to human rights defenders. He finds that is very important because one in three women in the European Union is exposed to some form of violence.
