SARAJEVO, October 29 (FENA) - Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey to Bosnia and Herzegovina Haldun Koç spoke in Sarajevo today with Prime Minister of the Una-Sana Canton, Mustafa Ružnić, about the migrant crisis in that canton, with particular reference to Turkey’s experience with migrants.

Ružnić explained to the ambassador that he asked for a meeting because of the deterioration of the security situation in that canton, adding that such a situation could be managed in the same manner it has been done by all countries that have faced similar challenges, but that there is lack of coordinated approach to the solution of this issue.

“We intend to bring this problem within the legal framework of Bosnia and Herzegovina, respecting all aspects of humanity towards migrants, and creating conditions for security in the Una-Sana Canton,” explained Ružnić, adding that their capacities cannot meet the needs of such a large number of migrants who come to this canton every day.

He reminded that the canton has two migrant centers that can accommodate up to 450 people, while the student dorm cannot be considered as a center for migrants, although there are now between 800 and 900 people there.

The problem is also the fact that there are about 200 migrants near the border crossing with the Republic of Croatia, but he points out that according to the BiH Constitution, cantonal authorities are not responsible for border management.

“Croatia has closed the border crossing on its side and we have migrants who move freely through the municipalities of the Una-Sana Canton, and at the same time no one has the exact data on the number of migrants in this part of BiH,” said Ružnić.

Ambassador Koç noted that the Republic of Turkey has several years of experience with the care of migrants and has offered shelter to more than four million people, and are therefore it is willing to provide BiH with support in this regard.

“Turkey is in the forefront of humanitarian aid, and according to the last year's report, in terms of its gross national income, the country stands out as a country which allocates the most for humanitarian aid in the world. We will provide support to BiH within our ongoing projects,” concluded Turkish Ambassador to BiH, Haldun Koç.
