The final conference of the 'Roma Action' project concluded today (VIDEO)

SARAJEVO, October 23 (FENA) - The conference "Roma Action - Supporting social inclusion of vulnerable Roma families in the flood affected areas by securing housing and social and economic measures with the active participation of state and local authorities, as well as other stakeholders" concluded today in Sarajevo.

The project enabled 140 Roma families, or 652 people from nine local communities to move into renovated or newly built housing units based on the principle of social housing.

Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Bosnia and Herzegovina Lars Gunnar Wigemark said that the project is part of the overall effort invested by the EU to provide support to members of the Roma population in terms of their housing in the area of ​​nine local self-governments, including Bijeljina, Kakanj and Gračanica.

He emphasized that the project was implemented in partnership with local authorities and together with the BiH Ministry of Human Rights and Refugees.

In addition to the social housing component, Wigemark said that the project also included activities in terms of creating better socioeconomic conditions, such as the provision of appropriate education services and the creation of new jobs.

The Minister for Human Rights and Refugees of BiH, Semiha Borovac said the project focused on the socio-economic empowerment of Roma in BiH, especially those that were afflicted by the floods of 2014.

“This is a significant contribution made by the EU Delegation to the Roma population, and at the same time a contribution to BiH, helping it to achieve all the efforts it has made since 2009 to make the a situation better for the Roma population,” Borovac said, adding that from 2009 to 2018, 23.6 million KM was allocated, which significantly improved the position of Roma in BiH.

She announced further support of the Ministry to the Roma population, because the Council of Ministers of BiH adopted the Action Plan for Education and the needs of Roma related to the needs of employment, housing and health care until 2020.

The total value of the project amounted to EUR 2.8 million, of which the EU financed EUR 2.5 million, and the rest of the funds came from the local authorities.

The project was implemented by Hilfswerk Austria International in BiH.
