Preda: Blocking implementation of the election results is not good for BiH

SARAJEVO, October 17 (FENA) - Rapporteur of the European Parliament for BiH Cristian Dan Preda warned BiH politicians that blocking the implementation of the election results and appointments of the new government would not be a good message for the citizens or the European path of BiH.

Commenting on recent General Elections in BiH, Preda told FENA he monitored the process closely, as well as the situation after the elections, noting that complex structure of the country also means complex election process, which is why it will take certain time before making a clear conclusion about it.

He added he believes the elections were well organized and implemented, even though there were some irregularities.

European Parliament and international observers emphasized what Preda underlined in his latest report on BiH, which is that the pre-election campaign revived divisions and nationalist rhetoric, while at the same time there were no specific proposals for implementation of reforms in BiH.

Such situation, added Preda, in a combination with media reports on certain candidates, directed the voters to vote a certain way and it definitely affected final results.

"Now we expect the end of the election cycle, after announcement of final results on all levels of government, and solution of election disputes between relevant government representatives, and most of all we expect government to be formed," he underlined.

He believes that will be a challenge, not only because of the unsolved issue of forming of House of Peoples of Parliament of FBiH, but also because of statements of politicians who announced they will set conditions regarding this issue.

High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the European Union Federica Mogherini and Commissioner for the European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn recently announced that implementation of the election results will affect the opinion on candidate status of BiH, which Preda finds is justified.

He reminded this decision lays on the member countries, that is, the Council of the European Union, not the European Parliament, but Preda repeated his stance that a state must be able to hold credible elections and implement election results in order to get a candidate status for membership in the EU.

Therefore, Preda expects that solution for a simple implementation of the election results and formation of government will be reached soon because BiH cannot waste any time on its EU path and implementation of the necessary reforms should not be delayed any further.
