Multisector approach crucial for more effective fight against domestic violence

SARAJEVO, October 15 (FENA) - The Gender Center as the FBiH Government’s Office and the coordinator of the implementation of the Strategy for the Prevention and Fight against Domestic Violence organized a conference today in Sarajevo with the aim to enable cantonal coordination bodies and municipal multisector teams to exchange experiences and practices in one place and strengthen cooperation in the field.

A two-day conference entitled 'Multidisciplinary Approach to Preventing and Combating Domestic Violence' is part of the UN Women project 'Standards for the Prevention of Violence against Women and Domestic Violence in BiH', financially supported by the Swedish International Development Agency.

A representative of UN Women in BiH Marbie Sartie said in a press statement before the conference that, in the case of combating domestic violence, there is still much to do in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also that we have to appreciate what has been done so far.

“One of these is this multisector approach, which allows the joint activities of various competent institutions. This includes the activities of non-governmental organizations, the social protection sector, law enforcement agencies and judicial authorities. Multisector approach is important to create a kind of network that will prevent violence against women from going unpunished. With this, BiH is making big steps in the right direction,” he stressed.

He believes that men should take part in the process of eliminating violence against women. This is another reason why UN Women has launched the campaign "HeForShe", which is specifically aimed at changing the attitudes of men (boys) in relation to gender-based violence, violence against women and gender equality in general.

Statistics show that majority of victims of domestic violence in our country are women, and violence of children against the elderly is on the rise.
