SARAJEVO, October 12 (FENA) - Head of the EU Delegation to Bosnia and Herzegovina and EU Special Representative to BiH, Ambassador Lars Gunnar Wigemark, expressed satisfaction with the message he said he heard yesterday in the media that the three newly elected members of the Presidency BiH have expressed desire to go to Brussels together.
He noted that this visit to Brussels would come after the establishment of the new government in the country after the recently held elections.
“It is very important that they agree that they should first visit Brussels, representing Bosnia and Herzegovina together. We need to hear this because, so far, we have only heard talks about divisions,” Wigemark told reporters in Sarajevo on the eve of the annual conference of the Association of Public Communicators of Southeast Europe (SEECOM).
Generally speaking, said Wigemark, it is important to have an open dialogue in Bosnia and Herzegovina on what it means to be a European, or what means for Bosnia and Herzegovina to one day become a member of the European Union.
“Certainly, Bosnia and Herzegovina is a European country in terms of its identity, the European identity. And this country can succeed, once you become a member of the European Union, in its goal for you, the citizens to feel Europeans, citizens of the European Union, but also the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as to identify as Bosniaks, Serbs, Croats and others...,” said Ambassador Wigemark.
After an intense election campaign, he stressed, different talks and discussions will follow in BiH.
“I would like to see political leaders, representatives of political parties to sit and discuss together about this topic for which, at least in principle, they have agreed upon, in the sense that they want to see this country in the European Union.
But then, they would have to be more specific - how to make this happen, how to ensure that after the elections, you have stable coalitions in legislative bodies that will be able to make those difficult decisions needed on the European path and on what it means to be European in this context,” said Ambassador Wigemark.
The annual conference of the Association of Public Communicators of Southeast Europe, which opened today in Sarajevo, where Wigemark is one of the participants, is being held alongside the Annual Assembly of the Association.
In the next two days, the participants will discuss the topic "Beyond geography: Europeans in search of shared identity", jointly organized by the South East Europe Media Program of the German Konrad Adenauer Foundation and in cooperation with the KAS office in Sarajevo and SEECOM.
Member of the SEECOM Steering Board Nebojša Regoje in a statement to the media before the conference reminded of the goal of this association which is to find a common form of public communication in general, from politicians to 'ordinary' citizens, by better explaining the ways in which the goals of one society can be achieved.
In the case of Bosnia and Herzegovina, this means a more transparent explaining to the citizens about the advantages of membership in the European Union.
