Ambassador Cormack: Cast your vote on Sunday guided by facts and not by fear

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, October 4 (FENA) - The United States Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina Maureen Cormack appealed today to citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina to base their vote on Sunday, October 7, when they turn to the polling stations, on the facts instead of fear.

In her message to the citizens of BiH who will vote in the General Elections on Sunday Cormack urged them to remain focused on key issues such as economy, education, corruption and healthcare, and to reject empty promises by delegating responsibility onto the political leaders.

“You are the ones giving your vote and not anybody else. I have utter respect for the citizens of BiH and it is not my place to tell you who the best candidate is to lead your country. My only goal is to appeal to you to make a decision, to be aware of your responsibility for making the decision on who will represent you in the next four years,” she added.

Ambassador Cormack said that this is precisely the way that citizens actively participate in building the future of the country, but noted that the voter's role does not end with filling the ballot, but it is necessary to continue demanding accountability from the politicians for what they have promised.

“You have to hold them responsible for improving the everyday lives of citizens in a concrete way. You already have many resources that you need in order to continue to be engaged in civil society and the political process,” underlined Cormack.

She believes that professional, impartial media is one of the key assets in the fight for transparency and accountability, and another one is civil society organizations that are fighting for stronger civil society, taking a stance together in order to represent the interests of citizens.

As Ambassador Cormack in her video message published by the US Embassy in BiH said that the democratic process can be frustrating, but the voice of the voters is crucial for achieving security, stability and economic prosperity that the citizens of BiH deserve.

“Voting on Sunday is only the first step on this path, and I urge you to take this first step for yourself, your children and future generations of this country,” concluded the US Ambassador to BiH Maureen Cormack in her message.
