TUZLA, September 20 (FENA) - The Tuzla International Airport (MAT) in the past eight months of this year surpassed its own record in the number of serviced passengers, and only in August, the Tuzla Airport had 64,000 passengers.

A favorable location and possibility for the development of cargo traffic are the reasons for the increased interest of investors.

“All the activities and investments in the last four years that have exceeded 15 million KM have made the Tuzla Airport a very promising company that is able to negotiate with larger investment companies.

Also, we have to mention that we do not have the internal legislation completed yet, or how and in which way we could enter the concession with certain companies,” said MAT Director Rifet Karasalihović.

A two-day conference organized by the IMF was held in Sarajevo few days ago, which brought together representatives of the airports from Belgrade, Zagreb, Mostar, Sarajevo and Tuzla, as well as representatives of the competent state and FBiH ministries to discuss prospects for public-private partnership in this field.

“As the Director MAT, I participated and gave my proposals, and if we have interested companies that want a concession, we need to regulate the long-term obligation relations, because at this moment we do not have the proper legislation,” Karasalihović added.

So far, investors from China, Austria and Turkey have shown interest in investing in MAT through concession agreements.

“We spoke with a delegation from Turkey and they asked us to send them information about MAT, after which they stated in the letter of intent that they wanted to invest in the Tuzla International Airport.

Of course, the Assembly, the Government and the ministry in charge make the final decisions, but they have offered a concrete numbers and a concession,” said Minister of Trade, Tourism and Transport of the Tuzla Canton Mirsad Gluhić.

In order for the Tuzla Airport to continue to grow, besides the legislation, we need to finish infrastructure works.

“The first phase of the reconstruction of the airport will be completed by September 25. Preparation of tender documentation for interior works is under way, which could take place in mid-October, while the overall completion of works is expected at the end of April next year,” said Karasalihović.
