BANJA LUKA, September 19 (FENA) - The US Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina Maureen Cormack said today in Banja Luka that the sanctions of the United States against SNSD Vice-President Nikolia Špirić do not constitute an interference in the political situation in BiH, since they were announced after a serious consideration of the situation with corruption in the country.

Cormack emphasized that, due to increasing concern about corruption and corruption practices in BiH, the US, Secretary of State and State Department have issued a ban on travel to the United States to Nikola Špirić.

"Adoption of such a decision has nothing to do with the current political moment here in BiH," Cormack said, adding that the sanctions have been introduced after the US Government worked for months on this process and conducted a series of inquiries.

She underlined that such decisions are subject to comprehensive legal review and added that the Dayton Agreement remains one of the crucial commitments of the US Government.

“The US laws that treat the sanctions issue, that apply to the Western Balkans, as it was the case with Milorad Dodik, help us to work against those who work against the future of BiH, its territorial integrity and its sovereignty," stressed Cormack.

Although Cormack has not had meetings with Milorad Dodik, she emphasized that the United States has very good and positive relations with RS and its citizens.

“Almost half of the money from our funds gets invested in RS, through USAID and grant programs for farmers, small employers, and enterprises,” said Cormack.

Regarding the announced visit of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, she said that BiH is a sovereign country that has the right to host the leaders of different countries.

“The United States and Russia work together all over the world on our shared issues and values. When our values and interests differ, then the United States defends its interests and values. No foreign power should interfere, nor have any influence on the electoral process in BiH,” said Ambassador Cormack.
